Check an e-invoice

Check XRechnung and ZUGFeRD for mandatory fields, totals and VAT rules.

Your files are processed directly in your browser and are not uploaded. They never leave your device.

How it works

Check an e-invoice in three steps

  1. Open the file

Drop the XML file or the ZUGFeRD PDF into the box.

  2. Read the report

Errors and notes come with the rule number, the affected field (BT) and a plain explanation.

  3. Fix and keep

Download the check report as a text file and pass it on to the sender or your software provider.

What the check covers

Rules checked

  • Mandatory fields under EN 16931, for example invoice number, date, currency, seller and buyer
  • Calculation rules: sum of lines, net, VAT, gross and amount due
  • VAT categories such as standard rate, reverse charge, intra-community supply and exemption
  • XRechnung rules, for example Leitweg-ID, contact details and payment instructions
  • Check digits of IBAN and Leitweg-ID as well as date and amount formats

Limits of the quick check

The browser check covers the key rules. The official KoSIT validator also checks the XML structure against the schema and all Schematron rules. Whether an invoice is accepted is decided by the recipient's check.

Common errors

  • Leitweg-ID or buyer reference missing
  • Seller contact details incomplete
  • Totals differ because of rounding per line
  • Exemption reason missing for reverse charge or intra-community supply
  • Electronic addresses of seller and buyer missing (mandatory since XRechnung 3.0)

FAQ

Questions about checking e-invoices

Does the tool replace the KoSIT validator?

No. It checks the key rules of EN 16931 and XRechnung quickly in your browser. The official KoSIT validator also checks the schema and all Schematron rules.

Which formats can I check?

XRechnung in UBL and CII, ZUGFeRD 2.0 or later and Factur-X (PDF with embedded XML), as well as Peppol invoices.

What do BT and BR mean?

BT stands for business term, a field of the EN 16931 standard, for example BT-1 for the invoice number. BR stands for business rule, a rule a valid invoice must meet.

What is a Leitweg-ID?

The Leitweg-ID routes invoices to public authorities in Germany. It is given in the buyer reference (BT-10) and has a check digit that the tool also checks.

Is my data transferred?

No. The check runs entirely in your browser.
