Connect PaperOffice to the database
Create a user account on first launch and enter the address, port and password of your NAS in the database wizard. PaperOffice sets up the database itself.

Which NAS models work with PaperOffice Classic?
Any QNAP, ASUSTOR or Synology NAS that can run MariaDB 10 or MySQL. The same applies to other manufacturers as soon as a MariaDB server is available as a package or Docker container. QNAP and ASUSTOR list PaperOffice officially as their DMS partner.
Does the NAS have to run permanently?
The NAS must be reachable while you work with PaperOffice, because the client accesses the database directly. An internet connection is not required for that, the local network is enough.
Can I access the archive while travelling?
Yes. The Windows client connects to the database server via TCP/IP, for example through a VPN or a port forwarding rule on the router. No third-party cloud and no synchronisation runs in between.
Where exactly are the documents stored?
In the MariaDB on your NAS or server, together with OCR full text, indexing, notes and tasks. Documents are stored encrypted and can only be read through PaperOffice with a valid user account.
How do I back up the database?
With the NAS tools: snapshots and backup jobs such as Hyper Backup on Synology or HBS on QNAP include the database. We also recommend a regular database backup, setup and restore are shown in dedicated videos.
How many users can work at the same time?
Up to 50 user accounts concurrently per database. Every user account needs a perpetual licence, and each account can be logged in once at a time.
What does PaperOffice Classic on the NAS cost?
€649.00 one-time per user account, valid for life. PaperOffice PLUS with updates, support entitlement and OnlineServices is included for 30 days and afterwards costs an optional €29.95 per month with annual payment. The database server on the NAS is free.
Does the client also run on macOS or Linux?
No. PaperOffice Classic is a Windows application, while the database server may run on Linux, the NAS or in the cloud. PaperOffice AI works platform-independently in the browser.
Can I use the same NAS with PaperOffice AI as well?
Yes. PaperOffice AI mounts your NAS as its own storage, known as Bring Your Own Storage via Storage Mounts. PaperOffice Classic keeps running in parallel, and the two products can be connected.
