MoreHow it works
PaperOffice accesses your NAS over the internet via SFTP or WebDAV. A storage mount saves the connection, and a connector or a workspace uses it.
Turn on the SFTP service or WebDAV with HTTPS, and create a dedicated user and folder. The NAS must be reachable from the internet, for example via DynDNS and port forwarding. If that is not possible, reverse SSH connects a source via a computer with OpenSSH.
In the web app, choose the purpose under storage mounts: import source for a connector, or BYOS storage as a storage location. Enter credentials and base path and test the connection.
Index leaves the originals on the NAS and reads subfolders too. Import brings in new files from one folder. BYOS stores a workspace's new documents encrypted on the NAS.
Capabilities
From a single scan folder to an encrypted storage location: per mount, you decide which role the NAS takes on.
Nothing is installed on the NAS. It connects like any server, via SFTP or WebDAV. OCR, AI and search run at PaperOffice.
Files stay unchanged on the NAS, subfolders are included, and renames and moves are tracked. For processing, PaperOffice keeps an encrypted working copy.
New files from exactly one folder land in the target workspace. The source file is then kept, moved or deleted. Moving and deleting only work with SFTP and reverse SSH.
Via SFTP, a workspace stores new documents as encrypted .pod archives with AES-256 on your NAS, with a password you set.
A BYOS mount can be mirrored to a second SFTP NAS, with every file operation replicated. If the first one fails, PaperOffice keeps reading from the mirror.
For sites without a fixed IP or port forwarding, a computer with OpenSSH builds an outbound tunnel. The app provides the commands for Linux, macOS and Windows. This path serves only as a source.
The index skips folders such as @eaDir, #recycle and #snapshot on Synology or @Recycle on QNAP, plus recycle bins, dot folders, lock and temp files.
At most three parallel connections per mount and retries with a pause on errors, so protection such as fail2ban on the NAS does not trigger.

Security and data sovereignty
In index mode, the originals stay on your NAS and PaperOffice keeps an encrypted working copy. With BYOS, the workspace's documents are stored encrypted on the NAS. OCR, AI and search run at PaperOffice in its own data center in the EU, which also holds full text, index, metadata and AI results.

No. There is no NAS app, and nothing is installed on the NAS. The NAS connects like any server via SFTP or WebDAV. OCR, AI and search run at PaperOffice.
A NAS, for example from Synology, QNAP, ASUSTOR or TrueNAS, connects like any server through a storage mount, via SFTP or WebDAV. SMB, NFS, AFP and Synology QuickConnect are not supported. S3 only works if an S3-compatible service runs on the NAS.
For a direct connection, yes: via SFTP or WebDAV, for example through a public address or DynDNS with port forwarding. Local network addresses such as nas.local do not work. Without port forwarding, a computer with OpenSSH builds an outbound tunnel via reverse SSH. It has to run permanently, and this path serves only as a source.
Import brings new files from exactly one folder into the workspace. Index leaves the originals on the NAS, reads subfolders too and tracks changes. BYOS makes the NAS the encrypted storage location of a new workspace via SFTP.

No. You set the storage mode once and for all when creating a workspace. For BYOS, create a new workspace. BYOS does not bring in existing NAS files on its own; use an index connector or the Data Importer from the Starter plan for that.
The .pod archives are encrypted with AES-256 and your password. PaperOffice keeps this password encrypted to open the files for processing and retrieval. Keep it in a safe place: without the password, the files cannot be read.
No. A connector only reads. OCR text, tags and AI results stay in PaperOffice. With BYOS, PaperOffice stores the workspace's new documents on the NAS.
