Compress PDF

Make PDF files smaller for email, upload portals and archives. Photos are reduced to the resolution they actually need – text stays sharp and selectable.

Compress PDF

Make PDF files smaller while keeping text and graphics.

Compression

Your files are processed directly in your browser and are not uploaded. They never leave your device.

How it works

Make a PDF smaller in three steps

  1. Add PDF files

Drop one or more PDF files into the box or choose them. Open protected files with their password.

  2. Choose a level

"Recommended" reduces photos and leaves text unchanged. "Strong" turns every page into an image and saves the most space.

  3. Save the result

You see the size before and after. If the PDF did not get smaller, simply keep your original.

Make PDFs smaller without uploading them

Everything stays on your device

Compression runs entirely in your browser. Your PDF is not sent to a server – which matters for contracts, payslips or expert reports.

What "Recommended" changes

  • Photos and scans are scaled to the resolution at which they appear on the page (150 dpi) and saved again as JPEG – but only if the image gets noticeably smaller.
  • Text, fonts, lines and vector graphics stay unchanged. Text remains selectable and searchable.
  • Page thumbnails, private data of other programs and unused objects are removed.
  • Images with transparency, CMYK images and JBIG2 or JPEG 2000 images are left unchanged.

When "Strong" makes sense

When a file has to stay below a fixed limit, for example for an upload portal, and selectable text does not matter. Every page is then saved as an image at 120 dpi. For pure text documents the result can even get larger – in that case you keep the original.

FAQ

Questions about compressing PDFs

Are my PDF files uploaded?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser. Your files never leave your device.

How much smaller will my PDF get?

That depends on the content. PDFs with many photos or high-resolution scans often get much smaller. Pure text documents are usually compact already; if the file does not get smaller, you keep the original.

Does the text stay selectable?

With "Recommended", yes: text, fonts and graphics stay unchanged. With "Strong", every page becomes an image, so text can no longer be selected or searched.

What happens with password-protected PDFs?

Open the file with its password right in the file list. The compressed version is no longer protected afterwards; protect it again if needed.

Can I compress several PDFs at once?

Yes, up to 20 files of at most 100 MB each, up to 250 MB in total. You get all results in one ZIP file and see the size before and after for each file.
